There are excellent surfing spots up and down the coasts on both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Costa Rica. Each have their own characteristic breaks.
For example, here are a few on the Caribbean side near our base:
Puerto Viejo: (also called "Salsa" for its juice power)
Thick and voluminous wave that comes from deep water onto a shallow reef - big, tubular waves. Restaurants and accommodations are plentiful.
Black Beach, Cahuita:
An excellent beach break, just north of Puerto Viejo. Not well known and therefore not heavily visited. Waves all year round. Usually ideal conditions for beginners.
Manzanillo:
A very fast beach break. Located 20 km south of Puerto Viejo, close to an unpaved road and easy to get to. Rustic lodging and typical food nearby.
